“The Hiring, The Hiring
Fair. First Monday in February. Coldest Monday in February. Eight
O’clock. Soon as it’s licht. See the farmers wi the
hinds. See the hinds bargain wi the bondagers. See the bonny
bondagers stand in a row “.
Full of warmth, passion, humour
and insight, Sue Glover’s award winning play Bondagers
tells the story of six farm women working on the great Border
farms of Scotland in the 1860s. The bondagers were women hired at
the annual hiring fairs by farm hands who were required to
bring female workers with them when they themselves were hired on
by the tenant farms. These resilient women take pride in
their work while building relationships through song and dance,
through compassion for one another and through their connection
to the land.
Sue Glover is one of Scotland's
foremost playwrights whose plays have been produced worldwide to
enormous critical and audience acclaim. Bondagers is a modern
Scottish classic.
